Hi there, greetings from Australia! We were over your way a few years ago.. loved singing 'Country Roads' like probably most other tourists whilst checking out the beautiful sights! So 'bush' is a term we use in Australia for a more wooded, forested, wilderness type area.. eg. 'We're going out bush'.. so Dad and his brothers called it that because compared to our area in the Wimmera there was just a lot more bush.. hence the clearing of it. Thanks!

Thanks for the comment mate...just said goodbye to my Mum as she stepped into eternity this week too...you can here her voice briefly at one point...it is indeed quite sad saying goodbye to so many from that generation that taught us all how to work hard, and make the most of what they had..and of course just miss my Mum. Thanks for the comment.. it certainly looks like a massive amount of work! I'm amazed they also had the presence of mind to capture all that footage while simultaneously working. That farm and their times there had a special place in the heart. Glad you've still got the block.. I went into education, but still get a bit nostalgic for those years out there with Dad.Thanks!

Thanks mate..there's a lot of that stuff they wouldn't be allowed to do anymore! Driving down the road with an oversize tractor hanging over the edge, held down by a cement post being one!! Not to mention probably clearing all that scrub!

He certainly did a great job with the commentary.. we had no idea at the time there would even be a way we could share it with people around the world. Yes I played the piano there.. it's called 'Kadles song'.. A version of what I played for Kate as a song she could walk down the aisle with. Thanks Riki!

There's still a bit of music, but it's very subtle.. that was one of my big learning curves from the double header video.. was very conscious of not drowning this story.. while still keeping a bit in there for mood.. But hardly anything when people talking.. My learning reflection is if music is doing it's job it enhances the story and is barely noticed.. so am glad that seems to have worked! Thanks for comment!

Certainly a different time now.. even when I grew up in the 70s there were farmers on just about every corner.. lots of community.. football teams.. etc. I think in many ways those years in the 50s to 80s were a great era.. where they had the tractors and gear.. but it didn't get bigger than Ben Hur!

Hi there mate. Thanks for the message. I love hearing from people on the other side of the world that resonate with similar stories! We did a trip to the States with the family a few years back and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves...would like to see more of the country. I remember Dad also talking about an Allis Chalmers..I'm not sure if they had one too at one stage. I've got a heap more interview footage of him telling the entire story from the horse era through to the tractors...so will keep my ear out as I go through it all again. All those tractors are quite the classics now! Glad you've still got it running and it isn't just rusting like a few end up doing! Thanks for the message!

Yes.. that's correct.. Aunty Bertha! She was the sister of Alma.. Who you briefly see walking with Ivan in the video. That's another whole story on that side of the family! Did you know her?

@@MatthewPolack yes Bertha lived next door in cromie Street, Bertha was a very good cook. I remember Ivan well, he was a good person and often visited Bertha. I was only very young at the time.

Thanks for that! Yeah Dad was great at chatting with anyone..he seemed to know everyone or at least some family connection in the Wimmera...so possibly would have known your Dad. He was a shire councillor, so got around in the community a lot. Thanks for the kind words...sorry for your loss...I still miss Dad and just having him pick up the phone and chat away with a word of encouragement etc..."We're praying for you Matt" he'd say...thanks!

Dad would talk a bit about the soldier settler era.. which was the world he grew up in, as farmers all over carved out a life. Your grandfather certainly would have had some historic tales to tell too! Thanks for the comment!

@@MatthewPolack pop never talked about the war. He was in the airforce setting all of the communications up, putting up the towers and stuff like that. I’m unsure if he was ever on the front line fighting. His service gun used to be sitting on the shed wall when I was young and I would always play with it and after the Martin Bryant massacre it disappeared. My uncle had gone to Adelaide and owned a small truck and worked as a taxi truck driver. Pop gave him an ultimatum to come back to KI and work on the farm or he would sell the farm. Well pop sold the farm. I was living in Kingston SE about 16 years ago when we moved to Lucindale. I recently sold my house in Kingston and moved to Naracoorte. How long ago did your father sell the Kingston farm?

@@paraplegicbradleyschubert1328 They sold the Kingston farm in around 1974 or so..I think Dad mentions the exact date somewhere in the video. Really their major focus was on the farm up near Dimboola....which Dad only sold in around 2000..he probably would have liked me to stay on the farm...I got into teaching and computers and video cameras etc! The Kingston farm was really a side project and a bit of adventure...it certainly brought a lot of memories and some great footage! They did such a great job essentially capturing the heart of the story all those years ago..with a very simple camera by today's standards..mind you there is something about the organic nature of the footage that digital cameras don't quite capture! Thanks for sharing a bit of the story of your pop..I think that is one thing that comes out through the various comments in the videos...there are so many stories out there! Lives lived...and we don't always even know what things have remained a little hidden with the passage of time. Thanks for the comment! Nice to have someone that knows the Kingston area! I'm so glad we got down there in what turned out to be Dad's last year!

Thanks again for all the comments mate... Yeah the Husky probably needs the carby cleaned or maybe the fuel is indeed dirty. Since buying the Ego I just don't bother with ithe petrol chainsaw anymore.. Let me know how you get on with the Ego. I wasn't sponsored by them or anything.. ended up making that video a bit spontaneously at the time when I first got the saw. I have genuinely continued to have a very good run with it.. main thing is making sure I have chains sharpened. Hope it goes well for you! I really must sell the petrol saw.. just don't need it anymore!

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm sorry you lost your Dad at 64...if Dad would have died then I wouldn't have been able to capture most of his story. I'm sorry you didn't get to spend those extra years with him..but there is a life to come...

It's great a new family is enjoying it.. they ended up focusing on the wheat country.. which was ultimately, as my Grandmother said, a better focus for them. They did have wonderful memories though of their time down there. Thanks for the comment!

@@MatthewPolack One can never look back as i'm also an ex-farmer and had watch the land values sky rocket higher, however they may be a day of reckoning too.

@@steigerpower Yeah it's fascinating what the land prices have become hey! Dad sold the farm.. . I remember though not long before he passed saying 'Dad.. imagine what it would have been worth now'.. and he said something along the lines of 'And would that really have mattered.. all that money?'

@@MatthewPolack Matthew i only wished i'd had more time to flim my dear old Dad's last years here in Central Q.L.D. I had use the same HB wheel rake hehind small tractor with bouncing seat n do have back issue from land clearing times etc from those days. Warm regard,Bill.

Yeah I am so thankful I had Dad's commentary.. combined with the footage, it brings it to life.. when we recorded that.. we had no idea there would even be a way to share it beyond a few VHS copies! The brothers themselves would also have had no idea people around the world could share in the story. We certainly do owe a lot to that generation! Thanks for the kind words. Blessings back!

Thanks for the comment! Sorry to hear you weren't able to save most of the footage...I am sure it would have been amazing! I'm so thankful I recorded Dad also doing the voice over commentary back in early 2000s, as it really helps bring the pictures to life. All that machinery has really become quite classic now and they certainly knew how to work hard! Would be great to see those old stick harvesters etc. Dad went on his honeymoon up to Queensland in around '69 and actually got a bit of sugar cane footage there too...certainly a different world to what we grew up with here on the wheat farms!
